ABOUT MARA Born in Limerick and having lived in Cork (IRELAND) for 14 years, - I have two sons, a grand-daughter and grand-son (whom I miss very much when I am away from them!) In 2003 a combination of factors and events combined to move me to Luxor, Egypt! What were they? Contract job finishing, big house I was maintaining by myself, realising my children did not "need" me anymore, realising I was young enough to start an adventure, the constant cold/wet weather, a desire to have an easier life (boy, was I wrong there!!), been to Egypt before and saw great business opportunity potential were the main factors. I bought a piece of land (to be honest on this...the owner kept offering and I kept refusing because I was genuinely not interested, but when the price dropped to a certain low level I couldn't refuse - well, you wouldn't - would you?! I did not know that this was part of the bargaining process in Egypt anyway!!) It took me a year and a half (and much sweat and tears!) to build Mara House. There is much more to the story but you have to come to Mara House to hear it! In 2009 my son, Stephen, joined me in Luxor and in Feb 2010 himself and his partner, Sara, moved to Cairo where they are now offering accommodation and taking care of visitors to Cairo, somewhat along the same lines as we do at Mara House - with the personal touch! During my time in Egypt I have gone through many personal changes, many learning curves and I am quite sure there are many more to come! I have a passable knowledge of the Arabic language and, I hope, a rather good understanding of the Egyptian people and their culture. I fell in love with Egypt the moment the plane door opened on my first visit. I would be lying if I said it has all been plain sailing here...it has not but I think I can safely say that I have found my feet and regained my balance! Through all the ups and downs of living in Egypt I still do not have any desire or inclination to move anywhere else. I feel I have come to know the ancient Pharaohs, their Queens, Priests and Sacred Sites on a very personal level. You cannot live among these temples and tombs, walk these streets and not wonder what life was like here for the people two, three or even four thousand years ago. I never tire of sharing my information and stories with anyone who wants to listen. It is mainly for this personal interaction and sharing that Mara House has become one of the most popular places to stay in Luxor. On another level I know what it is like to go on holiday (or even to try to plan a holiday) and be at a loss as to where to start.... If I was coming to Egypt for the first time I would like to find a place to stay that would be clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and have helpful, friendly staff. I would think it would be a real bonus to find the staff of that place honestly interested in helping me have the best holiday possible! I would like to know that I will see all the places there are to see of genuine interest. I would like to know that I will not be "ripped off", conned or overcharged by anyone. I would like to know that I would get genuine help and guidance in spending my time. I would like to know that I would get a chance to relax and not be run off my feet! I would like to know where to find good food, good wine and good entertainment. And so that is what I am doing in Egypt now! I treat my guests as I would like to be treated myself. It's that simple.
