Personally, having been to Cairo many, many times I now love it....I love the shopping (marked prices!!), I love the fact that for the most part foreigners are left to their own devices in Cairo (apart from the temples and monuments that is), I love the markets, the antique shops, the galleries, the cosmopolitan restaurants, the historical sites of medieval times etc.  the mosques, parks etc.  Cairo is a city that has so much to offer but it is a city that is totally unaware of how much it has to offer and therefore many of it's gems are not obvious to travellers who only go to Cairo for a few days to take in the places such as the Pyramids, Citadel, Museum etc.  I envy Stephen and Sara who now have the time to explore all these hidden places and I am sure that their knowledge of these "gems" will be one of the main reasons that travellers will want to stay with them as time goes by.

Stephen & Sara's "Rooms in  Cairo" are newly re-furbished and tastefully finished luxury apartments in Central Downtown Cairo(19 Adly St, off Talaat Haarb St), 10 mins. walk from the museum.

19 Adly Street straddles the headquarters of the Banque du Caire, a huge building, easily recognisable and easily found by even the freshest of Cairo's infamous and illustrious taxi drivers.  The apts are accessed via the entrance on the right of the bank and are situated on the third floor.

Apartment Ref. 12 is a newly renovated 3 bedroom luxury apartment.  Accommodation consists of 1 double room and two twin bedrooms, bathroom, an extremely spacious open plan living area, dining area and  a fully equipped modern kitchen. Decor is modern and minimalist with a funky twist thrown in here and there.  Bed linen and towels are provided and an optional free turndown service.  This apt is available for renting for a minimum of 2 nights and minimum of 2 persons - accommodates up to 6 persons.  The rate is $54 per person per night.

Apartment Ref. 11 is a newly refurbished 2 bedroom luxury apartment.  Accommodation consists of 1 double and 1 twin bedroom, bathroom, WC,  kitchen/dining area and sitting room.  With this apartment the decor is in keeping with the impressive, understated 1930's architecture of the building.  Bed linen and towels are provided, as well as, an optional free turndown service.  This apt is available for renting for a minimum of 2 nights and minimum 2 person - accommodates up to 4 persons.  The rate is $54 per person per night.

On arrival at your apartment you will be met by Sara or Stephen to receive your keys, answer any questions you may have and give you an orientation on the Downtown area including information on services in the vicinity such as cash machines, banks, restaurants, shopping guide, fast food deliveries and take-aways, monuments, attractions etc.  You will also be provided with mobile phone number for Stephen and Sara, who live in the same building, which will be answered 24 hours a day should you require any assistance.

If you require they can provide you with an Egyptian mobile phone for the duration of your stay in Cairo.  This is a free service, you only pay for your call credit.  They do require a deposit of 250 Egyptian pounds which is fully refundable on return of the phone.

In keeping with my intentions at Mara House in Luxor, Stephen and Sara's intentions is to help you in any way they can to make the most of your time in Cairo, to avoid the tourist traps and that you will leave Cairo with a desire to return again.

Optional Extras

Stephen & Sara can send a normal taxi to meet you at the airport and transfer you to the apts. in Adly St - fare 70 LE.

Meet & Greet at the train station, and transfer to your apt 30 LE

Private tours to major and minor sites in Cairo.

Comments from Guests of Rooms in Cairo

"The Best Place to Stay in Cairo!!"

My stay with Stephen and Sara was an extended one. I am a law student who had a summer job in an Egyptian law firm. So my mother, who decided to tag along because she wanted to see the pyramids, and I spent nearly six weeks in one of Stephen's apartments. First and foremost, Cairo has its own rules. The major rules center around how to catch a cab and how to avoid tourist traps. It seems that every other person you meet in Cairo is on the take: cab drivers, tour guides, cops, hotel staff, etc. However, Stephen and Sara are not on the take. They make your stay in Cairo enjoyable and safe. They also help people who are staying with them navigate around the aforementioned tourist traps. When we first met Stephen, after nearly four days in Cairo, he gave us the run down on how to get around and how to avoid many issues that befall tourists. Stephen and Sara, with the help of his mother Mara, also set up a Nile cruise from Luxor to aswan for my mother and I. They also arranged two tours of various sites in Cairo. Neither time did we have any of the monkey business that usually occurs with tourists. Also, they provided us with transportation to and from the airport. They would order food for us and they would do our grocery shopping. After nearly 7 weeks in Egypt I can honestly say that Stephen, Sara, and Mara were the three best parts of our stay in Egypt. They make everything so much easier and accessible. The three of them made our time in Egypt wonderful. I would personally recommend anyone who wants to stay in either Cairo or Luxor to live in Stephen's apartment or Mara House. After staying so long with them I am happy to say that they became more friends than landlords and I know that they treat all their guests with the same level of friendliness and hospitality. They are warm, gracious, and funny loving people. So if you are visiting Cairo, pop in and pay Stephen and Sara a visit. You will be so glad that you did. - 31 July 2010 guests from Miami, Florida.

"Excellence!"

Stephen and his partner (Irish ex-pats) met us on the street outside the property; they even helped us carry our very heavy bags. They were very attentive and detail oriented, supplying us with a map and suggestions for food and shopping. Although we did not need some of the services they offered, I am sure that they would be very helpful and informative about everything "Cairo/Egypt." The apartment itself is not only lovely, but it is also spotless. The kitchen is a cairo dream, fully stocked with everything you may need to cook. The beds were amazingly comfortable, and the apartment was very quiet. I am a career archaeologist and I have lived and worked in Egypt for many years. I have stayed in plenty of places in Cairo and this was by far the best! When I bring my group of students through Cairo on our way to join an expedition in middle Egypt, I intend to stay with "Rooms in Cairo" again. - 20 May 2010 guests from University of California, Berkeley.

"Beautiful and Clean Apartment, Great Location! "

We spent two nights at this apartment which is located in very safe area on Adly St. downtown between the synegague and Bank of Cairo. So there are security guards 24/7. The owner, Stephen came to the airport to pick us up. It was great to gather a lot of information about Cairo/Egypt from him on the way to the apartment from the airport. The apartment has been refurbished beautifully and I can only wish we could stay longer. It's very clean, beds are comfortable. The rooms are very spacious and kitchen has everything you need. It's on the fourth floor and the elevator works fine going up, but you'd need to take stairs to go down. Breakfast items are provided for convenience. It would be a great place to stay defnitely for longer stay. Having a mobile phone will be a great idea. If you don't have it, it's available for a hire from Stephen during your stay. Because of the downtown location, the noise is expected. We were tired enough at night, the noise didn't bother. We had a tax arranged through Stephen when leaving for the airport at 3am, there was no problem at all. There are a lot of hassles in Egypt when traveling. But staying at a place like Stephen's apartment, it guarantees the safety and trust, and eliminates the hassle and worry. -  4 April 2010 guests from Colorado.

"Centrally located, spacious, clean and comfortable."

My husband and I recently stayed in Stephan and Sara's apartment in Cairo. We stayed only one night at the end of our trip through Egypt and we we relieved to have the moment of calm. The apartment is centrally located, within walking distance to the fabulous Egyptian Museum, but at night the street is calm and safe (because the apartment is located above the Bank of Cairo, with many police in the area). Though we were independent in the apartment Stephan and Sara were present to give us advice and to help make our stay as pleasant as possible, much more personal than a concierge in a hotel, it was like having a niece and nephew looking after you. The apartment is spacious, the beds are comfortable, and once you're in the apartment everything is scrubbed until it shines. I could see that it would be perfect for a group of friends traveling together, enough room to spread out, nice public spaces (kitchen and living room), good bathrooms. The large kitchen has a breakfast table and cooking facilities and though we ate out in the evening, if we had stayed longer I would have gone to the nearby fruit and veggie market to buy and prepare the wonderful produce that is grown in Egypt. In any case, breakfast is provided every morning. When traveling it's a relief not to have to be in a restaurant or cafe every time you need a bite to eat or a cup of coffee, and it's good to take a midday break from sight seeing and the traffic, so the central location of the apartment is ideal. When not touring we sat in neighborhood cafes, drinking tea and watching the everyday life of Cairo rushing past us. Our experience was like really living in Cairo, in our own apartment, giving us as close to an authentic Egyptian experience as is possible. Ok, Cairo is total chaos but it was fun to imagine we lived there, at least for a moment.  - 27 March 2010 guests from Paris/Corsica
